- Diegetic - Sound that occurs naturally in the story (part of the storyline).
- Non-diegetic - Sound that doesn't occur naturally i.e. music or narration.
- Synchronous - Sound that can be heard and it occurs onscreen.
- Asynchronous - Sound that can be heard but occurs offscreen.
