Gender clip

What is representation in gender?
Representation in gender means how a male or female is presented in the media. The media usually present men in a masculine way (strong, aggressive, tough). They usually present women in a feminine way (sensitive, caring, gentle) outlook. In this clip, gender representation can be broken down and noted. Some of which are the stereotypical actions/behaviours that can be seen and some of which are not typically seen in everyday life.

The two main characters seen in this clip show a contrast in society. You have the typical feminine women who is out shopping and trying to look good - stereotypical.  Also - instead of having a masculine man, you have a man with behavioural actions that show a hint of femininity who also happens to be working in a women's shop. The contrast between these two types of femininity shows a variety of ways that society is looked at.

Camera shots:

The first shot that is taken is that of the man and women both walking. The women is walking up the stairs of the shop as the man is walking towards the other customer. Already, by looking at the way in which they both walk, you can anaylse their behaviour. The man is walking with broad shoulders and arms by his side. The woman is walking with a bit of sass in her stride and pouting constantly. This shows the gender differences between them both. She is showing a feminine stance compared to that of the man who is trying to look tough and tall/overpowering as he walks over to his customer.

The long shot taken next has been used to show the conversation with the man and his customer while allowing for the women to been seen in the background (to show her reaction). When the man tells the customer the price, it is clear to the audience that she cannot afford to buy the dress. The customer's reaction is then displayed in which she is looking upset (typical of a women who cannot afford to buy anything when shopping). The women in the background can be seen looking over. This is typical of a women to eavesdrop into other's business. The man is then seen to be glancing away during the conversation to show he is uninterested in her excuses if she isn't going to buy anything. The customer then talks about her daughter's wedding - trying to get sympathy from the man. This is typical of a women to try and make people feel sorry for her so she could get something.

There is a over the shoulder shot taken of the man to show him cowering over the customer. Although this is natural because of his height compared to her, it can also indicate gender authority. This means that because he is the male, he has more power/authority over the women.

A close up is then taken of the woman's hand. The women is seen wearing a diamond ring and red nail varnish. It is typical of a women to wear a big ring to show off how much money her husband can afford and to 'rub it' in everyone's faces. The colour red used for her nails represents sexiness - that of which women are all about. Trying to be as appealing to men as possible. The colour red can also represent attention. The nail varnish commands people to look at her so she's the centre of attention.

A shot is then taken of the man talking to the women. By looking at his hand movements and positioning, you can tell that this is not the stereotypical stance of a masculine man. His hands are being used in a gentle manner - typically of a sign of femininity. By looking at his stance, you can see that he is light on his feet and quick moving. This is also not typical of a masculine man.

The next shot is taken of the women trying on the dress with the man standing beside her. The fact that the camera follows her body upwards shows that she is looking glamorous and sexy to the audience. She is also wearing a black dress. The style of the dress reminded me of Audrey Hepburn who was known for her attractiveness. The man is seen using his hands in a gentle manner once again as mentioned before to show his feminine side. When told the price, the women hesitated but said yes. This shows she's well off and can afford to go on shopping trips and buy expensive clothes - which most women desire.

The next shot taken is of two men who are seen to be drinking and smoking. They're dressed smartly and having some free time where they are not having a care in the world. This indicates that they're laid back and have no worries. Typical of a working man. Drinking whisky is seen as a masculine action due to the strength of the taste of it. Only a 'man' can handle it.

After going from a calm scene, the next shot is that of the women in the shop who appears to of lost her ring. Her reaction to her losing her ring shows how a typical women acts. She is running around panicking, thinking that the world is over. This is relatable to most women who overreact and make the situation worse than it is. She is also seen complaining that her husband is going to be mad. This shows that she's only interested in what her husband thinks of her because he's the one with the money.

Another shot taken is of the two men who were seen drinking and smoking earlier. They're now laughing and having a good time - drinking whisky while the women panics. These contrasting behaviours make are stereotypical of masculinity and femininity. There is also a man seen wearing a suit on the other sofa reading a paper. The suits indicate that they're of a high status so are able to relax and chill out because they can afford to do so.

Editing:

An action match has been used at the start of the clip to show the women walking up the stairs. This is an action match because the next shot shows the women walking to the clothes rack - a follow up from the stairs. This has been used to show the woman's femininity and love for herself through her sassy walk and the pouting of her lips.

An eye match is used during the conversation between the man and the customer who is looking at dresses for her daughter's wedding. This eye match is used because the man is a lot taller than the women so she has to look up at him. It can also be used to indicate authority. As the man has more authority/power, he is looking down at the women.

A transition is used as the man walks across the screen. The transition follows the man from left to right as he walks. This is used to bring in the next scene - which is of the women. By using this transition, you're building up the suspension for when the women appears. This makes her more sexy and attractive to the viewer.

An eye match is used between the two men who are found drinking and smoking. As they're sitting down, they're both the same heights. This could also indicate the authority of men. Earlier when the salesman was talking to the customer, he was looking down at her. Due to the fact that the two men are both masculine, they're authority levels are the same so they look straight forward.

Sounds:

Synchronous sounds are found throughout this clip. The salesman leashes out a little cheer when the women says she's going to buy the dress. This indicates his femininity due to the fact he was jumping and cheering in a way of which a woman would do. A masculine man would not act or behave in this manner because it would be seen as too 'girly' so would instead act calming.

Another synchronous sound that can be heard is that of the coat hanger as the man puts it back on the rail. He took the dress off the women and put it back. This can show the authority that the man has over the women. The man is able to control the situation and take the dress off the women without hesitation. Due to the fact that she's a women, she doesn't fight back or start talking to him like perhaps a man would.

A diegetic sound that is found in the clip is that of the alarm when the man sets it off. The man is trying to fix this alarm. This is a masculine thing to do because it's typically fixing and building things. The only thing that goes wrong is the fact it goes off when it shouldn't so therefore shows that he's not doing it right but attempts it anyway.

A non-diegetic sound found is that of the music that is played almost throughout the whole clip - the only time it stops in when the two men are in the shop. The music stops during this scene perhaps due to the battle of masculinity and femininity. You have two men in this room, both of which appear to be different genders. This is an important part of the clip when looking at gender so no music is played to help show that.

Mise-en-scene:

The man in the shop is seen wearing a black suit with a red tie. Looking at the clothing of the salesman, you are understanding of the outfit due to the fact he's a man - the only thing is that he works in a women's shop. The red could've been used for the same reason the women's nail varnish was. To show a femininity in their appearance. Red is seen as a feminine and attention seeking colour. This indicates that maybe the man is trying to show off his femininity with the red tie.

The outfit of the women is that of a suit - with a skirt. The skirt is tight around the thigh and bum area and then it gets more loose as it goes to the knees area. She is wearing this outfit to show off her figure - of which is  petite. As a women, she wants the attention to be on her so therefore wears things that shows off what she's got to everyone.

The surroundings of the shop are particularly modern and show a element of expense. There are only a few racks that can be seen so therefore it isn't like a normal shop. As it's more expensive, less people are found in it. The two customers that are seen in this clip are two women and one man. The first of which cannot afford something and she's an old women. The other is one who presumably has money - from her husband and uses it to make herself look glamourous so people will look at her and think 'wow'. The man is looking for his girlfriend which shows that he has the money and is spending it on her, typical of rich men.

When the scene of the two men comes on, the location they're seen in appears to be quite old fashioned. There are old furniture and objects found in the room. This indicates that the men who're in there are upper class because it looks quite expensive. As they're men, their relaxation place is somewhere expensive and good looking (appearance wise) - compared to that of a woman who'd probably be less expensive.

The other man found in the scene who finds the ring appears to be wearing a suit. This also shows that he's got a bit of authority/power in some sort of business. The fact that all the men shown in the clip are wearing suits indicates that they have authority compared to the women. Three of which are shown and only one is seen to be wearing a suit.

Conclusion:

Overall, gender representation is found quite a lot in this clip. The realisation of stereotypical behaviours has been used and adapted to change the salesman's behaviour into more of a feminine way. This overall changed the whole representation of gender. It also indicates that stereotypical behaviour still does occur and can be shown through masculinity and femininity.

Homework - Analyse TV advert

What is representation of regional identity?

Regional identity is the identification of a specific geographic region of a nation which can be found through:
clothing, make-up, props, setting/location and accents. Regional Identity can be found throughout the Greek Yoghurt advert through the use of settings, clothing, props and accents. By analysing the clip through shot types, sound and mise-en-scene, I was able to give different aspects into regional identity that was shown during this clip.

Initial thoughts

A young boy first appears on screen. He opens a fence and looks at the cow. He then lets the cow go through the fence and then runs to a building to speak a different language to his mother. He then runs down a hill and gets directions from a man on a horse, an old man and an old women who point him in the direction of his cow. He then runs down some steps and finds his cow by a butcher who is sharpening his knives. The boy gets the cow and takes him back to the field and closes the fence. The boy and mother go into the house and the boy eats a yoghurt. The phone rings and the mother talks in a different language and then there is a shot of the total greek yoghurt on a table. Then, the advert ends.

Shot types:

In the beginning of the advert, there is a close-up of the boy. From looking at this shot, you are able to identity that the location of the advert is in a rural area due to the mountains and fields in the background. This indicates that they're living somewhere in the country away from the city area where it is noise and there are buildings everywhere. There is then a master shot to show where the next scene will occur - taken of the house. From looking at the house, you can tell that they're an old traditional house due to the old bricks, orange house and no windows. As you analyse the house and it's appearance, you think about the modern days and how houses look today. This traditional house is a complete contrast to modern houses as they're styled and designed in a more stable manner.

A shot of the mother is taken as she looks out the window of her house to talk to her son. This shot gives the viewer the 'stereotypical' feel of the mother as she is in the house cleaning and the boy's father is nowhere to be seen (presumably working to provide for the family). This shows the regional identity through the fact that the mother is the one caring for her child. This shows they're more traditional because in modern society, both parents have the opportunity to work and are mainly seen to both have jobs and work for their money.

A medium close up is then taken of the boy as he indicates to his mother that he is going to find their cow. By looking in the distance, you are able to see rocks and plants that are surrounding their house. This indicates that the whole area is covered with these plants compared to the modern life where this isn't possible.

A shot of a bell as taken as it's heard ringing. This shows that the village is traditional and uses an old method of bell ringing to attract the people's attention who live in the area.

A shot of the old man is then taken as he tells the boy which direction to go into. By looking at the old man's clothing, you notice that he is wearing a type of gown and hat. You are able to tell that the clothes he is wearing aren't similar to today's society because people now are into designer clothing and it's all about image. By analysing what the man is wearing, you are able to associate the fact that the area is more focused on how the village is run and that it is getting the necessary requirements to flourish rather than what to wear.

A long shot is taken as the boy runs down and finds his cow while the butcher is standing carving/sharpening his knives. By looking at the surrounding area, you can tell that it is not busy and fluctuated with people but instead is calm and peaceful. This represents the whole of the village in how they are/behave in a peaceful manner because they don't have to rush about everywhere -like in the city.
A Medium close up of the butcher is then shown as the boy collects his cow. This shows the reaction of man as the cow is taken away. This shot is interesting in the fact that the butcher doesn't seem too bothered that his potential investment into taking the cow and selling it on has just been taken back. This behaviour wouldn't be seen in the city because they would argue for the possession of the cow even if it wasn't theirs in the beginning.

 Sounds:

During this advert, there are a few sounds that can be heard.  Sounds that are diegetic are: the creaking of the fence (due to the fact that it is old much like the house so creaks when the boy opens it. The fact that the fence is there indicates that it's just for the safety of the cow rather than the thought of someone stealing it. In the city, people would be very protective over their possessions but because they're in the countryside, they trust everyone in the village), the horse's hooves (this indicates that this is their main source of transportation. Using animals to get around would not be seen in city instead it would be cars being used everywhere. This shows that the village is traditional and uses horsepower).

The bell being rung, the boy's footsteps as he runs down the stairs, the old women patting the rugs/mats (this would be a traditional way to clean and hang out your stuff due to the fact they didn't have any technology to use to dry their clothes), the old women speaking, the butcher's knives, the hooves of cow, the phone ringing and the mother's voice. These are all diegetic sounds as they occur naturally in the story and are part of the storyline.

Sounds that are non-diegetic are the music playing throughout and the narration of a man's voice at the end of the advert. These are non-diegetic as the sound doesn't occur naturally.

The sounds that are synchronous are the creaking of the fence, the boy speaking to his mother (this wouldn't be possible in a city without causing confusion between passersby members of the public. In the country, there is enough space and trust to call out to family members and know if they're talking to you or someone else), the horse's hooves, the bell ringing, the boy's footsteps, the old women patting rugs/mats,  the old women speaking, the butcher's knives, the hooves of cow and the mother's voice. These are synchronous sounds as they can be heard and occur onscreen.

There is only one sound that is asynchronous. This is when the phone rings (which is a twist from old traditional ways due to the fact she is using a mobile phone which wouldn't of been invented years ago in the Greek society), and the mother answers it. The sound of the phone ringing is asynchronous because the sound can be heard but occurs off screen.

Mise-en-scène:
As I observed the advert, I was able to see from that surroundings that there were in the outdoors and open space as there were mountains in the background along with fields. Throughout the advert, the boy walks through fields and grassy areas. This indicates that they are located far away from any city life and that the area is probably quiet.

The cow indicates that they own animals and could possibly be a farm life area as they look after the cow and it is in it's own field where the mother and boy go. This shows that the people who live around the area are into using their own resources to get by. The fact that the fence was also old and worn out indicates that it's not really there for the protection of someone stealing it like they would do in the city but in fact for the safety of the cow escaping.

The buildings indicate that the village where they are located are quite old as the brick work isn't properly secured and not particularly strong enough. The houses also have orange roofs and are mainly a white colour which indicate something of a tradition which occurred in the olden days of Greek life.

The clothes that the people wear in the advert are very shabby and dirty. This indicates that they do not own expensive clothes and that they always get them ruined and end up ripping the clothes due to the physical work they do. This could also be a sign that the area isn't particularly wealthy so cannot afford to dress decently.

The washing line is seen hanging up over the street when the boy runs down the path to find his cow. This indicates that the people in this community do not own any washing machines or dryers as they would've probably not been invented during this period. Hanging the clothes up and patting them down would've been the only way to get your clothes dry and clean.

The fact that the mother answered the phone was a different element in the advert as this wasn't a normal phone but in fact that of a mobile phone. Mobile phones wouldn't of been invented during the time period that the advert was set/shot in so therefore brought a modern feel to the advert. This made the viewer associate the mobile with today's society. The director would've done this to show the different aspects of old and modern life and to bring them both together in the end.

Conclusion:

Overall, the regional identity of the advert is well presented and remained present throughout the entire advert. The advert wanted to present the Greek yoghurt in a light which indicates that the yoghurt has been around since the old days. It also wants to show that you can have a calm and relaxed lifestyle and get rewarded with the yogurt if you do something good.

The regional identity in the advert distinguishes the time period in which it was set and is backed up by the setting, clothing, characters and props.

Exam preparation

Editing in Doc Martin

In the clip of Doc Martin, different editing techniques are shown throughout the clip. The first of which is the shot transition. Each shot that was taken was a straight forward cut as it went straight from one shot to another. The lengths of the shot cuts increased in the scenes where it was more chaotic. For example, when the pipe burst, shot cuts were more frequent and quicker giving the viewer an insight of the chaos.

Eye line matches were also present in the clip. Eye line matches are when different angles are shown of people looking at other people or specific objects. These were common throughout the clip. The first of which is when the plumber looks up at the Doc to try and explain something. The plumber was made to look up as he was sitting down on a chair and Doc Martin was standing up so he needed to look up at him.

Another eye line match was when the women entered the room while Doc Martin was trying to fix the burst pipe. As he was crouching down at the sink, he had to look up and speak to the women. This is a eye line match as they both had to look at one another from different angles.

A eye line match that is present is that of when the dog comes into the room and Doc martin looks down at it as he speaks. You know this is eye line match as the next shot taken is of the dog where he is at a low level. When the dog is left at the police station, the policeman also shows an eye line match as he looks down at the dog in front of him before they show the shot of the dog.

One action match is also present in this scene of the police station. This is when Doc Martin opens the door. The first shot of him is when he opens it and then the next shot (at a different angle) shows him walking through the door into the police station. This is one action match as the first shot leads up to the other.

Regional Identity in Doc Martin.

Regional Identity means how the clip/media indicates what region the area is in and what region the people are from.

In this clip, regional identity can be seen to show the type of place that this clip was taken in. The clothes (suit) of the Doc shows that he is professional as he appears to be the only main character wearing the suit. This shows that Doc Martin has authority over the people of the town and the workmen. As he is wearing a suit, people know to go to him if they need anything related to the Doctors.

When the pipe burst, the plumber's dad is seen just relaxing and being laid back. Compared to that of Doc Martin who is seen worrying and panicking. This shows that people in the regional area are more laid back and appear to not really have many cares in the world. Whereas people from the city (Doc Martin) are more panicky and stressful.

In this scene, a young women is seen wearing bright and colourful clothes. This shows that she is one of the only ones who is of the young generation and shows that the people who live in this area are all traditional and wear more mature clothing.

The buildings seen as the Doc is walking to the Police Station show that the surrounding area is traditional and that of the older appearance. This indicates that the regional area in which the scene is set would not be somewhere in the city but rather somewhere away from the busy lives of today's people.

When the Doc is near the Police station, the regional identity of the area is shown in the background. Hills and free space can be seen. This shows that the area isn't near the city so therefore, it isn't as chaotic or busy as it would be if it was near the city. In this scene, people are seen walking down the street. This indicates that they haven't got to stress about working and are able to go for a nice stroll around the area. As Doc Martin gets closer to the police station, an old couple are seen sitting on a bench. This also shows that they have free time and are able to just relax and enjoy the day without having any stresses.

The Police Officer is seen wearing a tie and jumper. This indicates that is has some authority due to the fact he is wearing a specific uniform with a badge on it that says 'Police'. This is done to show that he is of an importance in keeping the town safe.

When Doc Martin gets confronted by a women, cars are seen in the background. These cars are seen to not be moving but are instead parked on the roads. This indicates that there isn't much traffic and not a lot of people to cause a hold up. As the women and Doc Martin continue to walk down the road, people are seen walking to a bench and sitting down. This indicates that they have free time and have a laid back personality as they haven't got to be anywhere.

When the Doc reaches a school, he stops by the small fence and is easily able to see what is happening in the classroom. This would not be the same in the city as the environment would be busy and allow for people to watch what the children are doing. As the area is laid back, they do not feel the need to leave a big space between the window and the fence like they would do in the city.

Homework - Eastenders

Initial thoughts

Initial thoughts:
The clip starts in the living room with Derek and Kat. Derek talks to Kat about getting onto a plane and she disagrees. He then says he can be quite persuasive and picks up her coat and puts it on her. She moves across the room and takes the coat off and says she's not going. Derek then shouts at Kat and says 'PUT YOUR COAT ON'. Max and Jack then burst through the door and Max tells Derek to leave Kat alone. Max then tells Derek the things he's done to his family Both Max and Derek move in towards each other and Max says 'Im gonna kill you Derek'. Max pushes Derek. Derek then begins calling Max names and shouts at him. He then shouts out 'I AM DEREK BRANNING'. As Derek points at Max, it is shown that Max is crying. Once Derek has finished his rant. He turns to Kat, walks over to her and grabs her hand. She says no and then runs to Max for protection. Derek goes to go after her but instead Jack grabs him and holds him back away from her. Jack tries to take Derek out of the room and get him out of the house. He shouts 'Joey' to come and help. Joey comes in and grabs Derek from the back and helps Jack escort him out. They struggle to get him to the door and the rest of the family is seen looking confused and scared. Derek walks down the stairs outside and is followed by Max, Joey and Jack. Derek slowly backs off shouting at them. Jack, Joey and Max follow. Kat is then seen looking distort. Derek points to everyone and says 'you don't know what I'm gonna do to you'. He then begins heavy breathing. They walk off as Derek is struggling to breathe. Derek moves around slightly and makes loud choking noises as he turns and grabs the fence. Derek then turns around and leans his back on the fence.Derek falls onto his knees in pain. He then falls to the ground. Joey runs down the stairs shouting 'DAD' and stands over his body. Derek is seen lying still on the ground. Max, Kat and Jack all go over to Derek and Max says 'He's dead'.

Second thoughts:

Derek says to Kat that 'she ruined her life'. Derek tells Kat that they'll get a flight first thing in the morning. Max tells Derek that Derek thinks he's big man because he's been bullying women. That Derek has been threatening little girls, threatening Max's daughter and terrorising Max's wife. Max tells Derek that he lied to him about the money, the papers and the baby. Derek says he was protecting Max. Max then says she had an abortion and that she had an abortion because of Derek. Derek then calls Max the 'runt' of the family and that Derek wanted to show Max whose boss by referring to the coffin. Derek then looks at Max and says 'you and that snobby stuck up wife of yours looking down her nose at me'. He then looks at Jack and says 'you and that pill popping girlfriend treating me like dirt. I'm ashamed of you. I'm ashamed of the both of you'. He points at them and says 'he's done. He says he's got his own family and grabs Kat and leaves. They take him out of the room with the help of Joey and they're all shouting 'get him out of here' and 'get out'. Derek then walks down the stairs and threatens Max and Jack. He walks away and holds his heart as he falls to the ground. Joey, Max, Kat and Jack all go over to Derek as he's lying on the ground and then Max looks up at the rest of them and confirms the worst. That Derek is dead.

Shot types:
There is a medium shot that take place during this scene. This occurs when Derek and Kat are talking about what they will do first thing in the morning. An over the shoulder shot in then used when Derek is explaining about getting a plane and Kat reacts to what Derek is saying.

A medium shot is then used after Kat tells Derek no and that she isn't going. This medium shot allows for the viewer to see that Derek is picking up Kat's coat from the sofa and putting it on her. A shot reverse shot is used to show Kat's reaction to Derek putting her coat on her. A medium shot is then used again to show Kat taking her coat off and refusing to go with him.

An over the shoulder shot is used when Max and Jack are in the room and Max and Derek are having a conversation. By doing this shot, it is giving the viewer an insight into the conversation and how each character is feeling and reacting to what the other character is saying.

A medium shot is taken when Max pushes Derek and goes back to Jack. As soon as this happens, a close up is then taken to show Max's reaction.

A close up is then taken of Derek as he shouts at Max. Once this happens, a shot reverse shot is taken to show Max's reaction during Derek's speech about Max being the 'runt' of the family.

An over the shoulder shot is used when Derek continues to talk to Max as they have a conversation. This shot is used continually until Derek leaves the room with Jack and Joey trying to hold him.

A master shot is then used to show where Joey, Max and Jack are escorting Derek. This shows the viewer where the next scene will occur and gives them and shows limit of action.

A medium close up is then taken when Derek gets taken out of the house and goes down the stairs. As Derek walks away, a Medium shot is taken of him and Jack, Joey and Max as they walk towards Derek. A medium close up is taken of Derek as he grabs his chest and begins to start struggling to breathe.

A long shot is taken of Joey, Max and Jack as they walk up the stairs and turn around to see why Derek is making noises. A medium close up is then taken of Derek as he struggles to breathe. A long shot is then taken again of Joey as he runs towards his dad.

A medium close up shot is taken of Derek as he lies on the floor and then a medium close up shot is taken of Max as he looks up at the rest of them and says 'He's dead'.

Sounds:

In the begining of the clip, the Eastenders theme tune is played. The next sound to be heard is the actor's voices. Derek's footprints are then heard. As Derek picks up Kat's coat, a clanging noise is heard and then ruffling is heard as Kat puts the coat on and then takes it off. The next sound to be heard is the opening of the door as Jack and Max enter. As Max begins to talk to Derek, his moves back and forth shuffling which can be heard. As Max and Derek are talking, Max continues to shuffle which can be heard throughout the conversation. The next sound to be heard is the sound of Max breathing just before he goes for Derek. After that, the sound of Max's hands going onto Derek's body are heard and then the banging of a chair as Max falls back into it. Max's heavy breathing is heard as Derek rants at him. The sound of Kat's heels as Derek grabs her is then heard. As Jack and Derek lock each other's arms, ruffling is heard. The banging of the chair is heard again as they stumble into it. More shuffling and ruffling is heard as Joey comes in and tries to get a hold of Derek. A bang is heard as they fall back onto the hallway wall. The next sound to be heard is the opening of the door. After the door is opened, it makes a banging noise as it hits against the wall. The ruffling of feet is heard as they push Derek out of the house. The door is then heard closing. As they walk away from the house, footsteps are heard. The next sound is Derek as he struggles to breathe and begins to struggle as he chokes. A small sound is made as Derek falls to the floor and then footsteps are heard as they go to see him. The last sound to be heard is the theme tune at the end of the clip.

Throughout the clip, there are two types of sounds that are present. The type of sound that is used more is diegetic. The other type of sound that is used is non-diegetic. The times in which the non-diegetic sounds are found are:

  • At the start of the clip when the Eastender's theme tune is played.
  • At the end of the clip when the Eastender's theme tune is played.
These two sounds are non-diegetic as they do not occur naturally but are instead put in.

The type of sound that is more common (diegetic) is found when:
  • Derek's footsteps can be heard.
  • The ruffling of the coat as Kat puts it on.
  • The opening of the door.
  • Max shuffling his feet.
  • Max's deep breathing.
  • The banging of the chair.
  • Kat's heels as she moves across the room.
  • The bang when they fall back onto the hallway wall.
  • The opening of the front door.
  • The banging of the door against the wall.
  • The closing of the door.
  • Derek struggling to breathe.
  • Derek falling to the floor.
These are examples of diegetic sounds as they occur as part of the storyline.

Throughout the clip, there are two different types of sounds. One of which is synchronous and one of which is asynchronous. The sounds that are synchronous are:
  • The coat.
  • The door opening.
  • Max deep breathing.
  • The banging of the door.
  • The ruffling during the fight/grab.
  • The guys banging against the hallway wall.
  • Front door opening.
  • Front door banging against wall.
  • Shuffling of feet as they go outside.
  • Derek's choking/heavy breathing.
  • Derek falling to floor.
  • Guys running to body.
These are examples of synchronous as they can be heard and are onscreen.

The sounds that are asynchronous are:
  • Derek's footsteps as he goes towards the coat.
  • Max shuffling.
  • Kat's heels.
  • Front door closing.
These are asynchronous as they can be heard but are offscreen.

Mise-en-scène:

When observing the clip, I noticed a Christmas tree to the right of the screen. This indicates to me that the time of the storyline was either near Christmas or on Christmas day. By looking at the wallpaper and decor, I can tell that the owner of the house is that of a younger generation as they are very modern. Derek wore a suit which indicates that he has to wear it for his job and that he is very smart. Max is also wearing a suit which indicates he needs to dress smartly for his job. Jack however is wearing a top and a jumper. This shows that he isn't as smartly dressed as the other brothers.

The tinsel seen in the background and the decorations also prove that the time of the year is winter and that it's Christmas.

When the clip shows the women who are in the house, the clothes worn indicate a type of celebration. Tanya is seen wearing a wedding dress which tells me that they were getting married at Christmas.

As they leave the house, a shot is taken above the houses. This indicates that the houses are terrace.

The Christmas decorations found in the street indicate that the whole of the neighborhood like to celebrate the Christmas period by decorating the streets and scenery.

Mise-en-scène in Doc Martin

When observing the room that the first scene takes place in, I noticed that the colour of the wallpaper and floor is green. This indicates that the room is designed in an old traditional way. The suit worn by the doctor indicates that he is continually working and formal. The overalls worn by the father and son show that they're working and that it's their work uniform so must be worn. The boxes found on the screen indicate that the doctor may have recently moved in or is moving some items about to make sure that his house has been presented in a nice manor. As the plumbers were round the house, this could indicate that the house is old and that the plumbing system may not be working as well as it used too.

The girl who entered the room wore bright coloured clothing and had red in her hair. This shows that she is someone who is in the younger generation and may've moved out to the country as she isn't wearing traditional clothing.

As the Doc walked down to the police station, I observed that the buildings were old looking and made out of traditional brickwork. The walkway that followed the buildings was also narrow indicating that of a older setting.

When the Doc entered the police station, the policeman was hovering. This indicates that there is no major crime in the country and that the police officer has nothing else to do so he is hovering the station. This shows that country people obey the law and do not associate with trouble resulting in the policeman hovering.

Inside the police station, as with the room that was in the first scene, the colours used are dark and shades of green and brown. This shows that the police station is being traditional and sticking with the old colours that the village houses are based on.

As I observed the clip, I noticed that there were a few cars on screen but they were not moving and there was no sign of traffic.

People were also sitting down on the benches and relaxing showing that country people do not have any stress to worry about therefore they are more relaxed.

As the country people are more relaxed, the doctor carried around a prescription form in his pocket incase anyone wanted one.

Sounds in Doc Martin

At the start of the scene, a two beat music piece played and then the voices of the Actors were heard. As the dad was trying to fix the sink, the tool equipment made a ruffling noise against the components of the sink. The next sound to become present was the noise of the spillage of water that was being sprayed across the room. As this chaotic drama was taking place, the phone began ringing and it stopped when it got answered. Next a dog entered where it was found to be barking. Another musical tune played as he walked to the police station where you could then hear the door bell ring as the women opened the shop door. During this scene, you could hear footsteps from Doc Martin as he walked to the police station. Noises from seagulls then played as she came out of the shop. The next sound to be made was that of a hover as the police officer was cleaning his room. The next noise came from the door as it got closed and presented a banging noise. The dog then proceeded to wine as Doc Martin went away. The women then rustled with the items in her car boot and then closed the car boot which resulted in a banging noise. As they both walked down the street, the Doc reached into his coat pocket and a rustling noise was heard. A musical tune then played in the background and as Doc looked into the school, the music became more intense. The next sound to be heard was that of the crates being loaded into Doc's arms as they were banging against one another. As the vegetables hit against the crates, a small banging noise was produced.

Throughout the clip, there are two types of sounds that are present. The type of sound that is used more is diegetic. The other type of sound that is used is non-diegetic. The times in which non-diegetic sounds are found are when:

  • music is being played at the start of the clip,
  • As the Doc is walking down to the police station
  • when the Doc is looking into the classroom at the teacher (the music gets more intense when they make eye contact).
This is non-diegetic as the sounds being heard do not occur naturally but instead are put in.

The type of sound that is more present (diegetic) occurs when:

  • the dad makes the rustling noise with the tool against the sink.
  • when the spillage of the water sprays across the room.
  • when the phone goes off and begins to ring.
  • when the dog barks (heard before the dog is shown) and whines.
  • the seagulls that get heard during Doc's walk to the police station,
  • his footsteps that can be heard.
  • the door bell of the shop going off and the women comes out,
  • the hover being used in the station (which is also heard before it can be seen)
  •  the car door being slammed shut.

  • the ruffling of the jacket when trying to find his form to fill out and the crates and vegetables being unloaded into Doc Martin's arms,
  •  the teacher cutting the paper which can be heard through the window (this is done as an effect because in reality, you would not be able to hear any noise that is present through a glass window
  • when the old lady shouts out Doc Martin's name as she needs his help. Although you could hear her voice, you couldn't actually see her until she was presented on the scene.

These are all examples of diegetic sound as they occur naturally in the story and are part of the storyline.

Throughout the clip, there are two different types of sounds. One of which is synchronous and one of which is asynchronous. The sounds that are synchronous are that of:

  • The dog barking.
  • The water spilling across the room.
  • The noise from the tool as it hit the sink.
  • The footsteps heard as Doc Martin is walking to the police station.
  • The hover used in the police station.
  • The dog whining after being left in the station.
  • The door bell going off as the women came out of the shop.
  • The car boot being slammed shut.
  • The paper being cut by the teacher.
  • The phone ringing.
  • The vegetables being transported by the crates.
  • The ruffling of the jacket as Doc Martin tries to find his pack of forms.
These are all synchronous sounds as the sounds occur on screen.

Examples of asynchronous sounds that are present in the clip are:
  • The music being played at the start, middle and end of the clip.
  • The seagulls.
  • When an old lady says 'Martin' while Doc is looking in the school.
  • When people are talking in the background as Doc is observing the teacher.
These are all asynchronous sounds as they are sounds that occur offscreen.

Shot types in Doc Martin

At the beginning of the clip, a master shot is used to show the limit of the actions that are about to occur. This shot reinforces the status' of each individual by the positioning of each person. The shot taken consists of the Doc, a plumber and his son. The Doc has highest authority so is found standing tallest and then the plumber is found the next tallest and lastly the plumber's son who is found in the shortest position.

There are medium close ups that take place during this scene. One is of the son when he replies to his father and another one is when the women replies to the plumber's son after he answers the phone. As they have a conversation, a shot reverse shot is used to show that they are talking to each other and helps show the reaction of both of the people involved in the conversation.

Another master shot is taken after the phone call to show that the next part of the scene will show the limit of the action.

An establishing shot is used when Doc Martin takes the dog to the police station. This shot is used to show the viewer where the village is (sound and background) and used to establish where the next scene will occur.

A medium close up is taken when the Doc takes the dog into the police station. This shot is taken to show Doc after he hands the dog in.

An establishing shot is taken again when the Doc is walking past the school. This shot is taken to give indication to the viewer that the next scene that will be shot will be at the school.

A medium close up is used when the Doc and the teacher are looking at each other. The shot is focused on Doc as he looks at her. The shot turns back to the teacher as she looks away. The next shot taken is a close up of Doc to show his facial expressions and reactions to the teacher.

Second thoughts on Doc Martin clip

When the son stood up and spoke to Doc Martin, he refered to the literal focus about Bobby Moore and how the artist painted him with a gothic madness. As the pipe burst, the Doc was trying to remember a word and he couldn't quite remember it so the plumber's dad (also a plumber) begins trying to explain to Doc what the word means and continually goes on about the word. When the room becomes chaotic, Doc Martin commands everyone to do a specific job in order to maintain a calm vibe. As Doc Martin takes the dog to police station to hand it over, he uses a material to wrap it around the dog's neck as a collar. When he enters the police station, a police officer is hovering the floor. Doc Martin drops the dog off and leaves. Susan introduces herself to Doc Martin as he leaves the police station and tells him that he's 'exactly what the community needs'. Doc reaches into his pocket and retrieves a form and spells out Susan's last name with her help. When Doc Martin is looking into the school, his name gets called by an old women and she says 'come give me a hand'.

Initial thoughts on Doc Martin clip

The clip began with a room full of people. A father and son were fixing the sink for Doc Martin and as the son stood up and spoke, the dad began trying to fix the sink with a tool but instead burst the pipe causing the water to spray everywhere. While Doc Martin was panicking, the telephone rang and the son answered it, leaving the broken pipe. Doc Martin grabbed a pillow and began holding it over the burst pipe while the dad sat on his chair. A women then entered the room and Doc Martin began telling her off for not helping sort the mess out. Suddenly a dog entered the room in which Doc Martin had never seen (a stray dog). He then took the dog to the local police station and handed the dog over to the officer. As Doc was walking away, he bumped into a women who insisted he'd be a good help to the community. After she hinted about Doc writing her a form for some cream, she mentioned that the old doctor never really followed the rules. He finally filled in the form for her and sent her on her way. He then walked past a school where he looked in the window and saw a women who looked back at him. She wore a eye cover on her right eye. She looked at him then looked away. After a few seconds, he walked over to an old women who was unloading fruit and vegetables who told him that the women she was looking at was a teacher. He knew and said that he'd met her once before. They had a conversation about Doc meeting her as the women was giving Doc Martin  crates full of fruit and vegetables to carry into a building for her. They then both walked into the building and the clip ended.
